I can remember how desperate I was to believe that life wasn't as complicated as I was beginning to suspect that it might be. I can completely grok teenagers longing for "one true god."
I've just lived too long and gotten too old and life, well, life has been too wonderous, complicated, and amazing to cabin itself that way for me. And the world keeps on convincing me that: It's all real; it's all metaphor; there's always more.
The revival of Battlestar Galactica and the creation of Caprica was done by Mormons. The belief system suffuses the shows, altering what could be great SF into a muddled mess.
I loved the book "Ender's Game" but questioned much of the characterization, which affected the plotting. It wasn't until several years after first reading it that I learned that Orson Scott Card is Mormon.
The takeover of the Boy Scouts by Mormons is the main reason I won't allow my sons to join. I was in Girl Scouts, and while I didn't love it, I did learn from it.
The ending of Battlestar Galactica is just a variant on the Mormon creation story. I'm not even going to bother watching Caprica.
It's a religion for violent, anti-social, mentally-ill teenagers.
