Call me crazy, but I don't think that the Republicans are seriously interested in defeating him. Why would they want to? He's giving them everything that they want, wrapped up in a pretty package with a nice red bow.
It would not surprise me if the GOP were to field a couple of second-stringers in 2012 as sacrificial lambs. A Palin/Trump ticket might have some entertainment value. The party could then save its heavy hitters (such as they may have) for 2016.
