You know, the reaction of the Chinese government to
Tiananmen Square sucked ass.
But, I've got a great idea for the catholic church. Before you run around "strongly criticizing the Chinese government and calling on it to hold a full and open review of the killings," HOW ABOUT IF YOU strongly cirticize YOURSELF and "hold a full and open review of the killings" that occurred in the FREAKIN' INQUISITION THAT YOU FREAKIN' STARTED FOR THE SAME FREAKIN REASON THAT BUSH IS GIVING A SPEECH TOMORROW AGAINST GAY MARRIAGE, YOU FREAKIN HYPOCRITES?

Don't bottle things up -- let us know how oyu really feel!
BTW -- you ought to read the last section of Diamuid MacCullough's "The Reformation: a History" -- I am not encouraging you to read to whole thing (it is YOOJ!) but the last section is a most interesting discussion of odds & ends like why Anglicanism differs from other churches in the Reformed tradition, witchcraft, sexual practice, sexual identity, capitalism, etc. -- really quite fascinating (& should be available in any decent library) -- did you know that the Spanish Inquisition basically completely ignored "witchcraft" (whereas Protestant England & Scotland went batshit crazy!)?
Hecate, when you start out with racist, sexist, power manipulating premises, you're going to break a few eggs (as it were).
One thing that they got right in the Da Vinci Code was that the Church has committed itself to a posture that cannot admit any flaw. You might have noticed a few things like Galileo's 500-year wait for a pardon....
If the Catholic Church issued an apology for persecuting witches (and Cathars, and Protestants, and Jews), perhaps other denominations would follow.
