High Heeled Guide To, Well, Something

Goddess guard us, on the heels of a pretty vapid NYT magazine exploration of "Women Teaching New Age Stuff to Other Women," here's The High Heeled Guide to Enlightenment', a lighthearted exploration of what ideas such as reiki, reincarnation, shamanism, kabala, buddhism and wicca have to offer the modern woman. Written by the daughter of a Wiccan ("white witch" -- blech) father, the book was written because the author decided that, "there were no books aimed at the modern woman - the type that enjoy Cosmo or Vogue - and that's why I decided to do it myself. I guess Hex and the City wasn't tepid enough.

The author has a blog, here. Move over, Fiona.

As if we didn't have enough PR problems already. Maybe some souls who really *arn't* into the faux feminism of Sex in the City and Cosmo (and are just doing it because thats what they think they are supposed to do.) will get some enlightenment and spiritual fulfillment by a taste of Paganism.

Or hopefully they will just abandon it once it gets too hard. :)

Have you ever read "The Beauty Myth"? The rise of spell kits with lip gloss and stickers, and the pretty Witch celebrity, and so-called modern woman's spell books complete with pseudo-feminism *ahem* smells like an attempt to bridge the gap between dangerously liberated women and the old advertising schemes laid out in the Beauty Myth. Same patterns, different mask.
From the book description, I am left to conclude that it is a dabblers guide(Buddhism,Wicca,Reiki,Shamanism, reincarnation etc. Really?!) playing into the idea that beautiful, high heeled women could not POSSIBLY have any interest in something with depth *insert sarcasm here* , and we need it summed up for us :P Does our religion really have to come with a "tee hee" and glitter stickers?!

Reading the authors bio, I think an account of her growing up Wiccan would be much more fascinating... Frankly, I am hoping for a rise in experiential books in the coming years, particularly from 2nd and 3rd generation practitioners. It will be interesting to note how our practices evolve over time.

It's jarring to see "Wicca" and "enlightenment" juxtaposed, because I like to think we are more about "being" or "balance" or however you would phrase it.
