MAGIC IS AFOOT IN RICHMOND, VIRGINIA

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Pagan Pride Day Association will hold their first annual Pagan Pride Day in Richmond, Virginia, at Dorey Park’s Shelter #3. The event will be held on October 3 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. All ages and faiths are welcome. Dorey Park is located in Henrico County. The address is 2999 Darbytown Road Richmond, VA 23231-6010.

Pagan Pride seeks to educate the public about the various paths in Pagan spirituality and to promote community unity among the various faiths in our area.

Workshops in several areas highlight the event. Admission is a suggested donation to the food drive for the Central Virginia Food Bank or to the food drive for area animal shelters. Donations of non-perishable human and pet foods will be taken at the Gate. Dogs on leash and up to date with their shots are welcome.

Live entertainment by a bard will be throughout the day. Tarot and intuitive readings will be available throughout the event for a small donation. There will be an Autumn Equinox Ritual that will include a Croning Ceremony to begin at 3:00 pm. There will be a potluck following the ritual. The ceremony, open to the public, celebrates a woman’s passage into the Wise Woman stage of her life. Anyone wishing to celebrate their own Croning is asked to contact Freda at richmondurbanpaganchurch@yahoo.com.

Voting In Virginia

Virginia is having a Democratic primary election on Tuesday. Not that anybody's hankering for the witch's endorsement (No, really, please. Vote for my opponent; and be sure to tell everyone that you're doing so!) but here's how I'll be voting:

Governor: Brian Moran. Why? His website says: As a legislative leader, he consistently fought to uphold a woman’s right to choose. Brian has a strong pro-choice record and will take that record and his commitment to women’s rights to the governor’s office. Can't find anything on Craig Deed's site about his position on choice. And no way I'm supporting McAuliffe in the primary.

Lieutenant Governor: Mike Signer. Why? Nothing on his website about choice, but that's true of his opponent, as well. So generally, I'd go with Jody Wagner, because we need more women in Richmond, but Son knows Signer and assures me that Signer is solidly pro-choice. He'd better be.

For Arlington's Delegate: Alan Howze. Why? His website says: Strengthen Workplace Protections
Support the right of women to receive equal pay for equal work.
Strengthen workplace discrimination laws
Strengthen whistleblower protections

Protect Reproductive Rights
Fully support a women's right to choose.
Support efforts to reduce abortions through family planning and making contraceptives affordable and easily accessible
Support access for morning after contraceptive without a prescription
Support teaching age appropriate sex-ed in schools
Pharmacists should be required to provide all medicines prescribed by doctors and should not be allowed to deny women reproductive control by choosing not to fulfill selected prescriptions

The other candidates either don't mention women's rights or tuck them away and give them little emphasis.

Get to the polls on Tuesday.

Virginia Is For Democrats

Yesterday was a good day for the Old Dominion. Virginia Democrats seized control of the State Senate and made big gains in the House. Virginia now has its second Democratic governor in a row and one Democratic Senator. Next Fall, Virginia is almost certain to have two Democratic Senators, as Democrat Mark Warner is predicted to coast to victory over former (disasterous)Republican governor Jim Gilmore for the seat to be vacated by Republican John Warner. (The current set of Virginia's members of Congress includes 1 Independent, 7 Republicans, and 3 Democrats. That may take longer to change.)

Once considered a safely Republican state, Virginia has become quite blue in heavily-populated Northern Virginia (Arlington, Alexandria, and (now) Fairfax) and, interestingly, in Hampton Roads, which has a large military population. Virginia has 13 electoral votes -- enough to require the Republicans to spend time and money trying to defend it this coming Fall. That's good news in a year given that the Republicans have less money than the Democrats and would have preferred to have been able to count on a safe Virginia. Local Republican leaders appear to all be blaming the loss on the national party and the White House, and that may be true, as a number of the defeated Republican incumbents were, in fact, fairly moderate. Heck of a job, W.

It's going to be a fun twelve months to live in Virginia.

It's Important.

If you live in Virginia, remember to go to the polls tomorrow and vote Democratic. It's time to turn Virginia blue.

Update: An email from the Clinton campaign reminds me that on Nov. 5, 1872 Susan B. Anthony [went] to the polls in Rochester, NY, and vote[d] in the presidential election. She [was] later arrested for voting and ordered to pay a $100 fine. If you won't go vote for any other reason, go vote in gratitude to Susan B.
