Really, Some People Are Just Assholes.

In the Glorious War on Xmas, I am on Athenae's side. And it takes an entire boatload of stupid not to understand that Scrooge at the end of the story was happy, while Scrooge at the beginning of the story was mean, unhappy, petty, miserable. Kind of like today's "conservatives" and "libertarians." There's a message hidden a sixteenth of an inch deep there, boys. See if you can find it.

I prefer the 1951 Alastair Sims movie version of A Christmas Carol. It remains the only movie or media version that shows the real point of the tale: the Scrooge not only has neglected his nephew but has repeated his own father's sin: to blame the boy for his mother's death. Remember his ghastly horror when he sees his dying sister beg (and his angry younger self has left the room) for his charity towards her son? An open heart in the face of grief and sorrow and certainty of death -- and an end to that family cycle -- is part of the redeemation of Scrooge. As in the face of politics -- we look for an open heart to end cycles of despair.

Jan,

Wow, I haven't seen that version, but I'm going to see if I can find it on Netflix. Thanks for the heads-up.
