As
WaPo reports today, concerning THE ONE PERCENT DOCTRINE, Deep Inside America's Pursuit of Its Enemies Since 9/11, by Ron Suskind: "The book's opening anecdote tells of an unnamed CIA briefer who flew to Bush's Texas ranch during the scary summer of 2001, amid a flurry of reports of a pending al-Qaeda attack, to call the president's attention personally to the now-famous Aug. 6, 2001, memo titled 'Bin Ladin Determined to Strike in US.'
Bush reportedly heard the briefer out and replied: 'All right. You've covered your ass, now' (emphasis mine).
Three months later, with bin Laden holed up in the Afghan mountain redoubt of Tora Bora, the CIA official managing the Afghanistan campaign, Henry A. Crumpton (now the State Department's counterterrorism chief), brought a detailed map to Bush and Cheney. White House accounts have long insisted that Bush had every reason to believe that Pakistan's army and pro-U.S. Afghan militias had bin Laden cornered and that there was no reason to commit large numbers of U.S. troops to get him. But Crumpton's message in the Oval Office, as told through Suskind, was blunt: The surrogate forces were 'definitely not' up to the job, and 'we're going to lose our prey if we're not careful.'"
I fucking hate these fucking fuckers. Thousands of Americans are dead and it is George Bush's fault. He let it happen on purpose and he let bin Laden get away on purpose. Go ahead and send me a tin foil hat. No wonder the slimy little fucker sat there and kept his eyes firmly glued to MY PET GOAT.

I have always believed that he knew and did nothing, on purpose. Each new bit of information merely confirms that in my mind.
The awful thing is that I completely believe that he said that. It is in keeping with some other infamous lines of his, notably the one about how it was better that Brown take the heat than that he and Chertoff have to answer for their negligence in connection with Katrina.
As I said in an earlier comment, this alone should be grounds for impeachment.
Bush is guilty of at least ten, and probably more like twenty things that would have been grounds for impeachment if Clinton had done them.
Hecate - In that first vacation filled Summer of W's presidency I remember that the Daily Show aired a bit with Bush slouching in his golf cart without a care in the world. While answering a journalist's question he reached over, grabbed his short sleeve shirt hem and wiped his mouth with it. George the first was sitting next to him in the cart looking embarrased as hell at his unpresidential son.
The reason that I bring this up is that I remember that this was August 2001 but I am not sure if it was before or after that infamous briefing. If it was after it makes it even more shocking and sickening. I wish the Daily Show would run it again with a date stamp.

i still chalk 9/11 up to bush being a clueless idiot...but tora bora? yeah, they knew exactly what they were doing at tora bora.
