Darfur: Finally Some Encouraging News

BBC reports some encouraging news concerning the genocide in Darfur. BBC explains that, "UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi [described as "Mr Annan's top trouble-shooter"] is to try to persuade the government to accept UN peacekeepers in Darfur. A report by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan accuses the Sudanese government of depriving Darfur residents of fuel and food, breaking humanitarian law." In particular, Brahimi will work to convince Sudanese leaders to accept a UN peacekeeping force, which would "take control of the peacekeeping mission from the 7.000 poorly equipped and under-funded African Union (AU) troops."

The women of Darfur need serious protection. Let's hope they get it soon.
